How to Make a Hotel Mattress More Comfortable

Whether you are traveling for work or pleasure, there is nothing worse than ending up in an uncomfortable hotel bed.

The mattress is too lumpy, or too hard, or too bouncy, or too anything but comfortable. So, what do you do to make the most of your stay? Try these tips to make lemonade out of your (lemon of a) mattress:

Mattress sagging?

  • Add support to it by sliding objects underneath, such as those extra pillows and blankets that hotels stash away. Or, you might need to get a little creative and even use extra clothes from your suitcase.
  • Request a rollaway bed and place its lightweight mattress on your existing bed, doubling up the cushioning.

Mattress too hard?

  • Ask for some extra comforters and have housekeeping place them underneath your bed sheets. As an alternative, did you know that Mattress Insider can create a 1″ memory foam mattress topper which can be rolled up for easy transport and travel?
  • Or, if you don’t have the space to bring one with you, running to the local big box store for an inexpensive “egg carton” foam topper is a reasonable option.

Situation still bad anyway?

  • If you can’t get the mattress to your liking, then don’t be afraid to ask to be moved to a new room. Then, make sure someone shows you the new room and you try the bed before you agree to the switch!

A happy customer is a return customer, so don’t be bashful when it comes to making sure your accommodations are to your liking.

  1. Great tips! I often dread traveling because of work precisely because hotel beds are crap. Thanks for posting.
